Addiction to crystal meth (tik) is usually linked to cities, poor townships, and gangsterism ─ and not with South Africa’s expansive rural areas such as the Great Karoo. This heartland of South Africa is associated with quiet dorpies, wide expanses, and farming. In this eye-opening Street Talk TV short film, women and men living in Pearston talk about their tik addiction, how good the drug makes them feel, as well as its tragic consequences. They discuss the relationship between addiction, extreme unemployment and lack of social infrastructure in rural areas. This 2023 film ends with another rap from rap artist ReCash (Nathan Wallenstein). Note: the participants in this film are at different stages of drug rehabilitation. (Filmed in February 2023)
