We’ll be filming a very special episode of Street Talk this month. Accompanied by our partners STEPS, we’ll be travelling to Botswana where we’ll be joined by LeGaBiBo. This amazing organization is based in Gaborone, advocating the recognition, acceptance and equal protection of all human rights of the LGBTI community in Botswana. We have invited six members of LeGaBiBo to participate in the Street Talk process from inception to the final edit, training them on the basics of filmmaking.
For a number of years now, Botswana has been in the spotlight for its discriminative stance towards Homosexuality. At present, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons in Botswana face legal charges of up to 7 years imprisonment, stripping citizens of their right to decide how to express your sexuality. History tends to repeat itself, and by the look and sounds of it discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation has become the new racism. Not too long ago South Africa was caught in its own system of oppression, not unlike what the people of Botswana face today. In as many ways as society has moved forward, it is sometimes hard to believe that this level of discrimination still exits.
Through our collaborative efforts, we hope to equip the LeGaBiBo participants with the audio-visual skills and tools necessary in order for them to educate the public about the issues faced by the LGBTI community in Botswana.
This is why we’re passionate about what we do, helping to build a better society by encouraging active citizenship through discussion and the medium of film.
