Celebrating our Cape cultural inheritance

Many are unaware that Heritage Day, celebrated in South Africa on the 24 September each year, is closely followed by The United Nations’ (UN) International Day of Older Persons and is celebrated annually on October 1.

In partnership with NOAH and the Sector Task Team for Older Persons (STTOP) together with Ikamva Labantu and The District 6 Museum, we will be hosting a very unique Heritage Day event on the 1 October 2014 at the District 6 Museum in Cape Town, honoring both our heritage as a country and the elderly who have shaped it.

In their work, NOAH and STTOP work closely with the elderly and as a result are familiar with their life stories, coming from all walks of life they have lived through war, apartheid, reconciliation, democracy as well as the trials and tribulations of everyday life. Their stories are not exceptional or glamorous but are real.

As a contribution to the celebrations we’ve put together a short video, a group of soccer playing grannies from Khayelitsha showing young folk how it’s done.
